Universidad Simón Bolívar Quadruples its Internet Access Speed
University will cover growing connectivity needs and the reopening of a distance learning program
Caracas, Venezuela - February 26, 2009 -- Global Crossing (NASDAQ: GLBC), a leading global IP solutions provider, today announced that the Universidad Simón Bolívar (USB) will increase the speed of its Internet backbone access to 64 Megabits per second (Mbps). This expansion will boost the kick-off of new Web-associated solutions such as online education programs, providing access to study plans, supporting the exchange of information among different universities worldwide, and providing wireless access throughout the campus. In addition, it will minimize risks related to the security, confidentiality and integrity of all the information handled by the network.
"This service will enable the University to optimize the connectivity routes by means of an independent and consolidated system. Furthermore, it will provide a direct pathway to contents and upgrade of the educational sector, both in its Sartenejas headquarters as well as the Central Coast's," said Professor Romelio Carrasquel, Telematic Service Department Director of the Universidad Simón Bolívar.
"Use of information technologies benefits our students, teachers and researchers, allowing us to facilitate the reopening of distance learning, something that entails the expansion of Virtual Classroom Services of Universidad Simón Bolívar," added the professor.
"Backbone access was increased from 16 to 48 Mbps at the University. In addition, our future plans include the installation of a Wi-Fi network at the university campus," said Francisco Guzmán, sales and services vice president of Global Crossing in Venezuela. "This action will definitely benefit all students, researchers and teachers of the institution."
